[Stronsaylimpet] Vodaphone UK - no broadband or phone on Orkney

Vodaphone UK has responded to customers complaints about its broadband 
and phone services remaining down in Orkney following damage to a subsea 
telecom cable at the weekend.
Vodaphone users in the islands have spoken of their frustration that 
customers of other telecom companies are back online while Vodaphone has 
informed them it may not see its service restored until the cable is 
fixed. This is due to happen by early next week.
Responding to BBC Radio Orkney, Vodaphone said “The recent damage to the 
SHEFA-2 subsea cable has affected broadband services across multiple 
providers, including Vodafone. Openreach have assured us they are 
working hard to resolve the issue as soon as possible and a cable repair 
vessel has been deployed. We apologise to our customers for the 
inconvenience.”
Vodaphone was pressed to explain why other providers are back online and 
Vodaphone customers were not.
A Vodaphone spokesperson replied “ As the cable is shared, customers 
from a range of providers are impacted in varying ways depending on how 
the traffic is routed.”
Figures released this week show the merged Vodaphone and Three network 
has 1.65 million broadband customers in the UK and 28.7m mobile users - 
the largest in the UK.
Vodaphone appears to have failed to anticipate problems with the SHEFA-2 
cable, which has been damaged before. Other telecom companies have 
increased resilience by securing additional capacity in advance via 
alternative cable routes to keep their services online. It’s understood 
Vodaphone is now seeking similar additional capacity for future incidents.
