Vodaphone UK has responded to customers complaints about its broadband
and phone services remaining down in Orkney following damage to a subsea
telecom cable at the weekend.
Vodaphone users in the islands have spoken of their frustration that
customers of other telecom companies are back online while Vodaphone has
informed them it may not see its service restored until the cable is
fixed. This is due to happen by early next week.
Responding to BBC Radio Orkney, Vodaphone said “The recent damage to the
SHEFA-2 subsea cable has affected broadband services across multiple
providers, including Vodafone. Openreach have assured us they are
working hard to resolve the issue as soon as possible and a cable repair
vessel has been deployed. We apologise to our customers for the
inconvenience.”
Vodaphone was pressed to explain why other providers are back online and
Vodaphone customers were not.
A Vodaphone spokesperson replied “ As the cable is shared, customers
from a range of providers are impacted in varying ways depending on how
the traffic is routed.”
Figures released this week show the merged Vodaphone and Three network
has 1.65 million broadband customers in the UK and 28.7m mobile users -
the largest in the UK.
Vodaphone appears to have failed to anticipate problems with the SHEFA-2
cable, which has been damaged before. Other telecom companies have
increased resilience by securing additional capacity in advance via
alternative cable routes to keep their services online. It’s understood
Vodaphone is now seeking similar additional capacity for future incidents.
