There are big fundamental questions about energy starting to surface
in Orkney - and in particular about the cost: so how can Orkney's
renewables produce cheaper electricity for local households and
businesses? That leads into an even bigger question: what should
Orkney do with its abundant energy? Should it simply export it all
to industries elsewhere - or create some industries of its own? And
how do we get the benefits of industry without further
industrialising the landscape?<br>
Two people ideally placed to tackle such questions are Neil Kermode
of European Marine Energy Centre - EMEC and Dr Gareth Davies of
Aquatera Ltd, and they will do so in the opening session of the
Orkney Climate COP on Monday 8 September.<br>

There are questions too about transport options - is it
electrification for vehicles and ferries, or is methanol or ammonia
or synthetic hydrocarbon the fuel of the future?<br>
Could direct atmospheric or marine carbon capture, using local
energy, be the industry of the future? And for offshore wind
servicing, have we missed the boat?<br>
