STRONSAY ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEY
UHI Archaeology Institute is re-convening the Stronsay
Archaeological Survey in April 2024, after a 17 year hiatus, under
the leadership of Dr Ben Elliott. We will be restarting fieldwalking
activities on an annual basis, aiming to cover as much ploughed land
as possible to find material evidence of past lives in Stronsay.
Fieldwalking is an accessible way to identify and record the
archaeology brought to the surface by the plough, and can help us to
better understand the distributions of lots of different kinds of
artefacts and activities across an entire landscape. If you are
happy spending the day outdoors, walking fields, and adding to our
knowledge of Stronsay’s history, then this could well be for you!
Fieldwalking will take place on Monday April 15th and Thursday April
18th, from 10.00-17.00. If you are interested in being involved in
this, please contact Ben in advance via email:
benjamin.elliott@uhi.ac.uk, and he can give you the full details of
where to meet and what to expect. All welcome.
