From Mellissa Thomson on Facebook:
Home from a superb trip to Belfast to see the Artemis Technologies
100% electric hydrofoil vessels.
What you see in the videos/photos is similar to what is coming to
Orkney Ferries later this summer. The first one will be a 12m
passenger version of the workboat and following with a 24m larger
passenger vessel coming next spring.
This is a trial and we must not forget that but we’ll certainly be
putting them through their paces here in Orkney. If it can work here
it can surely work anywhere.
Incredibly professional set up in Belfast. The team involved in the
new technology are at the absolute top of their game, there’s
everyone from naval architects, engineers in everything from vessel
design, battery technology to wave heights. I have to admit to being
hugely impressed and very proud that Orkney Ferries are involved.
They had a huge simulator which was great to see the OF crew putting
through its paces.
Again these are a trial but if they can provide a better service to
the isles, then all the better.
As much as I hate hearing myself, have a listen back to Radio Orkney
on Thursday 21st March, think it’s 13 minutes in.
