Connectivity Update – Orkney
We have received an email from Robbie McGhee, Deputy Director – Digital
Connectivity, Scottish Government, and the following is a summary of the
information shared to help keep everyone as informed as we are.
A subsea cable failure has now been confirmed between Evie and Westray.
This will require a full cable lift and rejoin, which will be carried
out by a specialist repair ship. BT are currently working with cable
ship providers to secure an estimated time of arrival. Once that is
confirmed, repair timescales can be shared, although these will be
weather dependent.
Further discussions are planned tomorrow and we hope to have a clearer
picture after that.
Current service impacts:
BT fibre network remains down for around 500 customers
Vodafone Three (Voda3) and Virgin Media O2 (VMO2) mobile networks are
also down
PSTN landlines and EE mobile services remain operational, although some
residents have reported capacity issues
Work underway:
BT are exploring the potential deployment of a temporary radio link
between Westray and Sanday to restore some fibre connectivity
Considering Starlink connections be deployed to help restore
connectivity at key public sector sites
BT’s Emergency Response Team are expected on Orkney this week to assess
and implement temporary solutions

Thank you to everyone who has been sharing updates about service
availability. These are really helpful and are being fed back to
Scottish Island Federation and in turn , the government team and to BT.
If you have any queries, please email Shani at stronsaydevelopmenttrust.com.
Please note that I am currently working with limited connectivity, so
responses may take a little longer than usual.
I will continue to share updates as soon as we receive them.
