For years the ‘shared cabin’ policy worked well on NorthLink vessels,
allowing islanders to get a good night’s sleep on the Aberdeen route
while keeping costs down. With Ministers and NorthLink refusing to
reintroduce the policy after covid, however, islanders are forced to
choose between paying the full price of a cabin for a single berth, or
face sleeping in chairs or on the floor.
I was surprised to hear the Minister suggest the policy has not been
re-introduced due to health and safety concerns, given that I’m aware of
none having been raised about a policy that worked perfectly well for
many years.
It is also disappointing that successive Transport Ministers have failed
to address the significant loss in value of vouchers under the
government’s concessionary scheme, with islanders now having to use two
vouchers to pay for a berth rather than one.
Despite the Minister’s unhelpful response, I will continue to press the
case for the reintroduction of shared cabins and would encourage
constituents to respond to the government’s consultation before it
closes on 13 October:
