Orkney’s damaged subsea broadband connection now won’t be fixed until
Wednesday August 6th.
Cable owners Faroese Telecom say the specialist vessel Cable Vanguard
has been delayed.
Managing director Pall Vesturbu said “ The vessel was due to leave
Dunkirk this afternoon. It’s due off Kirkwall on Saturday morning for
crew transfer, with arrival at the fault site south of Orkney around
Noon the same day.”
He continued “All subject to weather, but the repair is now expected to
be completed by Wednesday next week.”
The cable was snagged by a fishing boat early last Saturday morning.
It’s caused disruption for hundreds of customers in Orkney and Shetland.
Many have been switched to back-up services but some still have no
internet or phone service.
Some Vodafone customers say they have been told they won’t be
reconnected until the cable is fixed, which had been expected this
weekend. They could now face 12 days or more without a service.
Vodafone has rejected criticism of its failure to reconnect its
customers, saying “As the cable is shared, customers from a range of
providers are impacted in varying ways depending on how the traffic is
routed.”
Northern Isles MP, Alistair Carmichael, says frustration with the poor
response of some network providers is growing. He’s , warned “once the
dust settles” the Westminster government must examine their capacity to
respond to more serious disruption to isles infrastructure.
Mr Carmichael is calling on people and businesses affected by poor
performance and communication from their network provider to contact his
office by email at alistair.carmichael.mp at parliament.uk or on 01856
876541 (Orkney) or 01595 690 044 (Shetland).
