The cable repair boat has arrived in Orkney to repair the subsea
telecoms cable SHEFA-2 which was damaged last Saturday. Track its
progress using the link in comments.
The cable’s Faroese owners say specialist staff will now assess the
damage, and they expect the cable will be fully repaired by Wednesday.
Are you still experiencing problems? Let us know.
Internet and digital phone services in Orkney and Shetland have been
affected since the cable was damaged by fishing gear. The network has
been running on a back up cable since then. The repair will restore
services to the main SHEFA-2 connection.
The arrival of Cable Vigilance is good news for households and
businesses which have been left without access to the web, like the
Stromness post office, the Birsay Bay tearoom and Lerwick Sheriff Court.
They will have spent up to 12 days offline by the time the cable is fixed.
Orkney and Shetland MP Alistair Carmichael says the damage to the cable
is evidence the Northern Isles need improved resilience for our digital
connections. He is asking anyone who has been badly affected by the
outage to get in touch with his office.
