🌊*Big Changes Coming to Our Ferry Services!*🌊
We know how important reliable, comfortable ferry travel is for island 
life — and we’re making progress on replacing the ageing fleet serving 
the Outer North Isles. Here’s a quick update on where things stand and 
what’s coming next:
🔹*New Ferries Coming!*
The ageing fleet is being replaced — Scottish Government funding is 
helping to move forward with design work.
🔹*What Will They Be Like?*

  *
    Draft design: 60m long, 190 passengers, space for 34 cars or 10 HGVs
  *
    Fully accessible: lift, wheelchair spots, quiet area, play space,
    pet area & more
  *
    Designed to work with our existing piers — no big infrastructure
    changes needed

🔹*Which Design Works Best?*
Out of 3 options, the/Monohull Ro-Pax/came out on top — best for 
performance, comfort & fit with current harbours.
🔹*What’s Next?*
✅Simulator testing starts in June
✅More community consultation
✅Final design approval expected by October
✅Construction could begin late 2025 (if funding confirmed)
🔹*Phase 2 – Looking Ahead*
Plans are also underway for ferry and pier upgrades for other islands 
including Papa Westray, North Ronaldsay, Rousay, Hoy & more. Designs are 
due by Autumn 2026 with community engagement at the heart of the process.
