BT has now confirmed a delay in the switch-off of the analogue ‘copper
wire’ landline system, and that it is pausing the transition of some
vulnerable customers to the new internet-based landline system, Digital
Voice: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5119g5z4q5o

I welcome this much-needed pause in switching off the analogue landline
network but BT must now explain what it intends to do with this extra
time. How will it guarantee access to lifeline landline services in
rural communities such as Orkney, for example, where mobile signal can
be inconsistent and removal of the analogue network risks leaving people
‘cut off’ in the event of extended power outages.
Representatives from BT and the regulator, Ofcom, will be attending the
next Orkney Digital Forum to provide an update and answer questions. The
Forum starts at 12pm on 31 May in the St Magnus Centre, Kirkwall. You
