There's been lots of chat on social media and in the news over the last
couple of days about the new Scottish Government legislation on wood
burning stoves. We thought it might be useful to highlight some key points:
The new legislation - which we are required to apply by the Scottish
Government - only applies to new builds. You can still install a wood
burning stove in an existing house and you don't have to take one out if
you already have one.
Our understanding is that the legislation is designed to move folk
towards heat pumps, electric heating or solar thermal systems when
building new homes. In practice in Orkney, more or less all new
buildings applied for in the past few years use electric heating of one
form or another already, primarily heat pumps, and these heating systems
achieve all of the required heating demand for these properties.
At present our local agents who submit building warrant applications
will be familiarising themselves with all of the changes introduced on
the 1st April and ensuring relevant applications meet these new
requirements. As ever, advice is available from our Buildings Standards
team.
