There are three enquiries now underway into the grounding of the Varagen
100 meters off Rapness pier in Westray on Friday evening.
The crew have been interviewed by the Marine Accidents Investigation
Branch, and there are separate investigations being carried out by
Orkney Ferries and by OIC harbours.
The hull of the vessel has also been surveyed by divers for the Maritime
and Coastguard Agency who will decide what - if any - action is needed
before she can re-enter service.
The ferry re-floated on a rising tide just over an hour after becoming
stuck on sand with 41 passengers and 10 crew on board.
The OIC says there were no injuries, no water was taken on board, and no
fuel released.
Harbour Master and Head of Marine Services, Jim Buck, will be on ”Around
Orkney” tomorrow morning. Hear the programme live on 93.7fm, BBC Sounds
and UK Radioplayer, tell Alexa to “play BBC Radio Orkney” or hear it on
demand later via our Mixcloud page.
